Many people struggle with establishing a home practice. To get us all going, the Yoga Center sponsors Yoga Practice Month, or YoMo, once or twice a year. We're doing it again this January.
The idea is pretty simple. You commit to practicing some yoga every day during the month. You can practice at home, in your yoga classes, or with friends. This is a commitment to yourself—the Yoga Center and your fellow YoMo participants are there to help you.
The Yoga Center keeps track of who’s participating, but you keep track of your own progress. We don't hound you to make sure you’re getting in those daily practices. You’ll know.
We have a new email program, so even if you signed up last year you'll need to do it again.
You are the one who defines your practice. For some of us, a daily practice includes a minimum of an hour and a half of uninterrupted time on the mat. For others, it may be six Sun Salutations, or three poses in a row.
One way to think of it might be that a daily practice is intentional. A couple of Downward Facing Dogs on the fly while you’re waiting for the water to boil is great. Is it a practice? Maybe.
On the other hand, it’s definitely a practice if you spend ten minutes doing Mountain Pose, Downward Facing Dog, and five minutes of Corpse on the mat.
I'm the one sending YoMo emails and acting as the general YoMo cheerleader. I've been a Yoga Center student since 2000, and I manage the Yoga Center website. The most satisfying and enriching times for me as a student have been when my home practice is very frequent. I find that lots of support keeps me going. With YoMo, we can all support each other.
If you have questions or comments or ideas for making this project better, feel free to send me an email.
