Are you signed up?
This email is going to everyone on the Yoga Center list, just in case you really really want to do YoMo and you forgot to sign up. You can still sign up online, or at the Yoga Center. I've been out of town, a bit longer than anticipated, and haven't posted a sign-up sheet, which I will do within the next day or two. If you get there before I do, just write down your name and email address and the word 'YoMo' on a piece of paper at the desk, and I'll put you on the list.
And by the way, if you don't get signed up before Jan 1, so what? Sign up any time! You could sign up on Jan. 29th and that would be the start of YOUR YoMo!
Getting ready
You don't really have to get ready for YoMo, because the main thing is just getting on the mat and practicing.
However, there are a few things you can do to prepare:
- Find a good place to practice. A hardwood floor is nice, but not necessary. Room to lie down on the floor and extend your arms out to the sides is nice, but not necessary. A quiet spot, away from other people in your household is nice, but not necessary. But knowing where you'll be removes that decision from the daily choice to practice.
- Find a good time to practice. It's a lot easier to practice regularly when you do it at the same time every day.
- Think about how you're going to practice. You may already have a nice solid practice where you know exactly what you're doing every day. If not, you might decide to use a videotape to practice with, or you might get use a practice from a book. You could use the Preliminary Course book available at the Yoga Center, or you could find sequences on Yoga Journal. Knowing what you're going to do ahead of time will help you be motivated to get on the mat.
- Pick a default short practice for the times when you can't do a longer session. That way, you will at least get in a tiny bit. It could be six Sun Salutations, or it could be the Magic Three (child's pose, down dog, and standing forward bend). The idea is to have it ready to do without having to think about it (and without coming up with excuses why you can't).
- Consider a focus pose that you can build your practice around. Last year I did Virabhadrasana III (Warrior III) every day as my focus pose. So even if I only had time for a few poses, I did that one. When I had more time, I incorporated related poses into my practice to make Vira III stronger.
